The name of the lake in Tajikistan originates from the Persian words "Iskander", meaning "Alexander", and "kul", translating to "lake". According to some legends, the reservoir acquired its name because Alexander the Great visited it while marching towards India from Central Asia.

The lake, situated within the breathtaking Fan Mountains, boasts a rich and lengthy history. It is believed that the lake was named in honor of the legendary Commander-in-Chief, Alexander the Great, known locally as Iskander Zulqarnain. This title translates to "Iskander the Two-Horned," referring to his distinctive helmet resembling horns.

After Iskander Zulkarnain's visit to the lake, the locals renamed it Iskanderkul. The lake, found in the northern region of Tajikistan, near the Sugd province, is approximately 180 kilometers away from the nation's capital along a high-altitude and scenic road. Along this route, one encounters captivating natural landscapes, including snowy mountain peaks cascading into the azure sky.

The lake takes the shape of a triangle, covering an area of 3.5 square kilometers. Its water depth reaches 70 meters, making it a stunning sight. Surrounded by towering mountains, the reflective surface of the reservoir appears perfect. The uniqueness of Iskanderkul lies in its status as the largest body of water among the mountains, situated at an elevation exceeding 2000 meters. The lake holds 172 million cubic meters of water, with a coastline measuring 14 thousand meters.

Nearby, stands an ancient juniper (Juniperus) tree adorned with colorful ribbons. Visitors leave small tokens upon admiring the local waterfall, anticipating returning for another visit. Another notable feature is the 43-meter waterfall dubbed "Fan Niagara." Located at the source of the river flowing out of the lake, this impressive cascade attracts nature enthusiasts.

In addition to these natural wonders, there is another lake called Snake Lake. Local folklore suggests that numerous snakes inhabit this body of water, claiming that reptiles won't bite if they're in the water or drinking the water. The water in Snake Lake is slightly warmer compared to Iskanderkul, allowing for comfortable swimming.

Another intriguing legend surrounds the Macedonian horse, Bucephalus. According to tales, the horse drank water from the lake during a rest stop after a long journey and subsequently fell ill. The commander decided to continue his quest to India, leaving his loyal steed behind. Despite being separated from him by thousands of miles, Bucephalus sensed his master's sorrow and jumped into the lake, perishing there. On the night of the full moon each month, Bucephalus reappears, grazing the surface of the lake. His appearance is marked by a white horse alongside his groom.
