Ile St.-Louis, Paris, France
Embark on an extraordinary journey as we traverse the historic heart of Paris, immersing ourselves in the enduring significance of vines within its contemporary urban fabric. Our exploration concludes with a delightful sampling of authentic, natural wines, offering an unparalleled sensory experience.
The vineyard located within the Parc Joseph Mignaret serves as a poignant reminder of a broader narrative. Although the current vines, planted but recently, are primarily ornamental rather than economically viable, they offer a direct connection to the historical vineyards of the Marais and the storied past of medieval Paris. King Charles the Fifth built his palace adjacent to this location to escape the crowded and noisy Isle de la Cité. The Hôtel Saint-Pol, a royal residence dating back to 1361, stands on the site of an earlier structure constructed by King Louis IX. Situated in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, the property encompasses expansive grounds extending from the quai des Célestins to the rue Saint-Antoine, and from the rue Saint-Paul to the rue du Petit-Musc.
The Marais’ rich history is intricately linked to the role of the vine, particularly in the gardens of the Hotel Royal St-Pol. The rue Beautreillis, known historically as the "street of beautiful trellises," has been marked by notable figures such as Cézanne and Jim Morrison. On the rue Charles V, another intriguing tale involves a notorious poisoning incident. The Hotel Fieubet, situated on the Quai des Celestins, marks the southeastern boundary of the Hotel St-Pol’s original estate. Below the Pont Marie, the river Seine served as one of Paris' busiest commercial ports until recent times.
Our guided tour continues with further historical insights along the Seine, culminating in a tasting session at a natural wine shop. This event features two or three tastings (blindly chosen), paired with exquisite organic bread, meticulously selected cheeses, and seasonally sourced organic vegetables. Participants will delve into the mysteries of natural wines, exploring the significance of living soils in crafting superior vintages. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of the distinctions between biodynamic, organic, and conventional agricultural practices. Additionally, attendees will uncover the misconceptions surrounding sulfur and learn about its importance in winemaking. Throughout the evening, guests can enjoy the company of fellow wine aficionados, experiencing the pinnacle of Parisian hospitality.
