The German language is a West Germanic language spoken primarily in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and parts of Italy and Luxembourg. It is one of the official languages of the European Union and is also widely used as an international language due to its numerous speakers and influence on other languages. The standard form of the German language, known as Hochdeutsch or High German, is based on the dialects spoken in northern Germany. Modern Standard German (Hochdeutsch) was established by Johann Christoph Adelung in the early 19th century with the publication of his textbook "Grammatik der deutschen Sprache" ("Grammar of the German Language"). There are several regional varieties of German, each with its own unique features and characteristics. Some notable examples include: - **Alemannic**: Spoken in southern Germany, particularly in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Alemannic German has some distinct phonological features compared to standard German. - **Swabian**: Spoken in Swabia region of southwestern Germany. This variety differs from standard German in terms of vocabulary and pronunciation. - **Sorbian**: Spoken in eastern Europe, specifically in Poland and the Czech Republic. Sorbian is closely related to Silesian but is classified separately because of its geographical isolation. German literature spans centuries and includes works by renowned authors such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, and Bertolt Brecht. These literary contributions have had a profound impact on German culture and continue to influence modern German society and politics.
