Embekka Devalaya, established during the Gampola Era by King Vikramabahu III (AD 1357–1374), is a notable religious monument dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo. This ancient structure comprises three distinct sections: the "Sanctum of Garagha," the "Digge" or "Dancing Hall," and the "Hevisi Mandapaya." The latter section, known as the "Drummers' Hall," stands out due to its elaborate wood carvings and high-pitched roof, attracting visitors with its exquisite craftsmanship. Historically, the Devalaya's foundation dates back to the 14th century, coinciding with King Bhuvanekabahu IV's reign (1341–1351 AD). Constructed under the guidance of Chief Minister Senalankadhikara, the temple showcases a blend of architectural styles, including Tamil Pandya motifs and influences from Hindu temples. The roof design includes distinctive rafters that converge towards the viewer, held in place by a "Madol Kurupawa," a rare architectural feature. With approximately 514 unique designs across various decorations and patterns, Bekkamala Devalaya remains one of the most impressive structures in Sri Lanka.
