Kazbegi National Park, Tbilisi, Georgia
Explore the Tergi River Canyon and discover its natural wonders, including breathtaking views of the Great Caucasus Mountains and the stunning Gergeti Trinity Church situated at an elevation of 2,150 meters. Additionally, immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage by visiting the ancient village of Juta.
The early-morning journey begins as a four-wheel-drive vehicle picks up the traveler from their accommodation in Tbilisi, guiding them through the historic Georgian Military Highway towards the Kazbegi region. Upon arrival, the first stop is at the Ananuri Fortress, standing majestically atop the Georgian Military Highway, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Jinvali Lake and its environs. This fortification, dating back to the 14th-18th centuries, was once home to the Eristavi of Aragvi, a notorious local ruler. Its distinctive architectural design features a fortress, two churches, an ancient watchtower, a prison, and civic buildings, protected by high, turreted stone walls. The main church façade showcases intricate animal, floral, and Celtic-style carvings.
Continuing our route, we reach the Gudauri Ski Resort, followed by the ascent to a stunning mountain pass known as Jvari Pass. Our vehicle will navigate the challenging terrain to ascend approximately 25 kilometers to the charming village of Juta, nestled at an elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level. Situated amidst the majestic Chokhi Mountains, reaching a height of 3,842 meters, this remote high-altitude village offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscapes.
Upon arriving in Juta, we embark on a scenic biking adventure through the Sno River Valley, traversing terrains adorned with ancient villages, towering castles, cascading waterfalls, and serene natural vistas. As we make our way to the village of Stepantsminda, we cannot help but marvel at the mesmerizing vista of Mount Kazbeg, rising majestically to an impressive height of 5,033 meters.
Our final destination lies just beyond Stepantsminda, where we arrive at the Gergeti Trinity Church, an architectural masterpiece built during the XIV century. Perched on the southern slopes of the Kazbegi Mountain range, the church commands both awe-inspiring panoramas of the nearby Tergi Gorge and the expansive surroundings. For those who might struggle to climb to the church’s summit, alternative transportation options such as a 4WD vehicle may be arranged upon request, ensuring everyone reaches their desired location safely and comfortably.
This expedition promises a blend of historical exploration, breathtaking mountainous landscapes, and memorable experiences, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking a unique and enriching journey through Georgia's diverse and captivating regions.
