The Whirling Dervish ceremonies were initiated by Jalaluddin Rumi, a prominent Sufi Muslim mystic and poet from Persia (modern-day Turkey), during the 13th century. Born in Konya, which served as the capital of the Turkish Seljuk Empire at that time, Rumi encouraged his followers to explore various paths towards spiritual enlightenment. He advised them, "There exist numerous avenues leading to God. I have chosen the path of dance and music." Consequently, Rumi's teachings inspired subsequent groups to adopt similar practices.

Inspired by Rumi’s philosophy, other religious communities began spreading these techniques across the Ottoman Empire. Among the most influential was the Mevlevi Order, founded by Rumi himself. Members of this order were known as semazens. By the mid-15th century, the Mevlevi Order had established strict guidelines to preserve their rituals and traditions, ensuring the continuity of their spiritual practice.

Following the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees will partake in a communal beverage, followed by a return to their accommodations.
