The ancient settlement of Carcassonne, dating back to the 6th century BC, evolved into an important Roman town during the late fourth century. Fortified in the same era, it served as a crucial strategic location throughout the Middle Ages. Its unique architectural design, characterized by a distinctive double-walled rampart system, was further refined in the 13th century when King Charles received the commission to build the castle and reinforce the defenses. After enduring destruction during the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229) and subsequent events such as the Inquisition and the exodus of the Trencavel family, the city was meticulously restored by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. His work culminated in the completion of the restoration project in 1911, which brought the city back to its former glory.
