Lion'S Head, Cape Town, South Africa
Embark on an exhilarating ascent to Lion's Head for unparalleled panoramic vistas at sunset. Enjoy diverse terrain with dynamic viewpoints and engaging boulder problems along the route.
The journey commences on a gravel track threading through enchanting groves of silver-leafed trees, offering an array of ever-changing vistas as it meanders around Lion's Head. As you venture deeper, the panoramic spectacle unfolds: the majestic Atlantic coastline and the towering Apostles of Table Mountain come into view.
Subsequently, the gravel track narrows to a path, at which point you'll encounter the first paragliding launch pad. Proceeding onward, you traverse a series of stepped paths, each presenting stunning vistas of the highly popular Camps Bay Beach and Clifton beaches. After another thirty minutes of hiking, you arrive at a bifurcation in the path; from this junction, you may choose to ascend the rock pitches on the left, or to take the more challenging route to the right.
Should you prefer a gentler ascent, opt for the left-hand option, where you will proceed down a rocky shelf with a chain handrail. Upon reaching a fork in the path, make your decision between circumnavigating the two rock formations or ascending them. Regardless of your preference, continue forward towards the next notable feature—a cliffside lookout with sweeping panoramas of Seapoint on your immediate left.
As you near the summit, prepare for a steep incline leading to the first ladder. Ascend this ladder carefully, then move onto a precarious shelf with a sturdy chain handrail. Continue walking until you reach a fork again, where you will find yourself facing a choice of routes—either continuing straight ahead for a scenic scramble to the southeast ridge, or taking the alternative route to ascend the rock formations.
If you're not inclined towards vertical ascents, maintain your course to the crest of the southeastern ridge, where you can admire the vast panorama of the city of Cape Town and the imposing silhouette of Table Mountain. Alternatively, if you wish to explore the rock formations, continue along the path past the colossal stone pines, eventually guiding you to the top of the 669-meter summit.
Upon reaching the peak, enjoy unparalleled views of the entire region, including the bustling metropolis of Cape Town and the iconic Table Mountain.
