Tangier Tour

Asilah, situated on the picturesque coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, offers a charming blend of historical charm and modern amenities. This fortified seaside town boasts an array of unique architectural styles, with its narrow streets adorned in soothing hues of white and blue, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, Asilah's rich history makes it a significant cultural destination, offering visitors insights into its storied past through its numerous historical landmarks and museums.

Asilah traces its origins back to the ancient Phoenician port of Zilis, established around 1500 BC and situated approximately three kilometers northeast of the contemporary settlement. During the course of Arab Muslim dominion, much of the city's medieval quarter was constructed between the 8th and 10th centuries AD. However, the imposing fortifications surrounding Asilah were erected by the Portuguese, who captured the town in 1471. Following their occupation, the Portuguese retained control of Asilah until 1589, when it temporarily fell under Moroccan sovereignty before being annexed by Spain. In the late 17th century, Moroccan forces reclaimed the town, while during the 18th and 19th centuries, it emerged as a notorious haven for pirates, leading to significant military engagements. These conflicts culminated in widespread Austrian assaults in 1829 and subsequent Spanish administration from 1912 to 1956. Today, Asilah enjoys renewed autonomy but retains the distinct legacy of its colonial history, characterized by an Iberian influence on its culinary arts and cultural heritage.
