OMSHA Travel - Travel Guide to Bhutan

Delve into experiences such as visiting Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, and Paro. Engage in hiking activities towards the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Explore historical sites including ancient temples and fortresses. Indulge in cultural immersion by visiting local farmhouses. Savor traditional Bhutanese cuisine. Marvel at picturesque glacial valleys.

Upon arrival at the Paro International Airport, guests will be met by an English-speaking guide and transported to Thimphu, the capital city. This journey takes approximately one and a half hours. Upon arrival in Thimphu, guests will proceed to check-in at their accommodation. For lunch, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the National Memorial Chorten, where they can observe elderly individuals praying and circumambulating the stupa. They will then visit the Paper Factory, where traditional Bhutanese handmade paper is produced. Following this, guests may choose to stroll along Norzin Lam, the heart of Thimphu's downtown area, or visit the Tashichho Dzong (known as "the fortress of the glorious religion"), housing the main secretariat building and central monk body.

The itinerary continues with visits to various cultural sites such as the Kuensel Phodrang, Motithang Takin Preserve, and the Crafts Bazaar, offering insights into local craftsmanship and traditions. Additionally, there will be opportunities to witness archery demonstrations and engage with local communities during the weekend markets.

Following these excursions, guests will travel to Gangtey, situated approximately three to four hours away by car. During the journey through the Dochu-La Pass, guests will appreciate the panoramic views of Himalayan mountain ranges, particularly the Druk Wangyel Chorten, a cluster of 108 stupas. From Gangtey, they will proceed to Phobjikha Valley via Punakha/Wangdue.

Upon arrival in Gangtey, guests will have the chance to learn about the valley's history at the Crane Information Center. Notably, Phobjikha Valley serves as the winter habitat for the critically endangered Black Necked Cranes, migrating from Tibet's harsher plains to its warmer, more hospitable environment. The valley's unique landscape, including its numerous glaciers and serene lakes, provides a stunning backdrop for photography enthusiasts.

Next, guests will embark on a scenic drive towards Punakha, visiting the iconic Punakha Dzong, which served as the ancient capital of Bhutan. The dzo, or sacred deer, plays a significant role in the region's folklore and culture.

From Punakha, guests will continue to Paro, passing through the lush rice terraces and enjoying the breathtaking scenery along the Male River. In Paro, guests will have the option to hike to the impressive Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, providing a picturesque view of the surrounding rice paddies.

The final leg of the journey concludes with a visit to Taktsang Monastery, where devotees recount the legendary tale of the Great Guru Rinpoche flying atop a tiger and establishing this revered Buddhist site in the 8th century. Guests will have the opportunity to take part in a 2- to 2.5-hour hike to this historic site.

For lunch, guests will visit the Paro National Museum, allowing them to delve deeper into Bhutanese history and culture. Following the museum tour, guests will visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong, a prominent fortress in the region.

In the evenings, guests will participate in a traditional Bhutanese hospitality experience, dining on local cuisine and taking part in a traditional hot stone bath.

Finally, after breakfast on Day 5, guests will depart for the airport, ready to board their onward flights.
